Torquay Street building works

Monday, May 13th, 2013
Torquay Street - No 3

The redevelopment of the Torquay House site is progressing. The tower crane is erected and the work on the ground is nearly complete. The next step is the erection of a concrete frame.

To minimise work on the site, and hence disruption to neighbours, as many elements as possible will be manufactured off site. This will reduce construction time, deliveries, CO2 emmissions, noise and dust, however most days there will be a morning and an afternoon delivery to the site.

A banksman will be in the road directing the vehicles, which will not be allowed to wait in Torquay Street and will be asked to attend the site when they can go straight into the segregated unloading area.

If you have any queries please contact the Galliford Try Project Team on 020 7604 8830.

Major Improvements at St. Mary Magdalene’s Church

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The latest phase of improvement work is just coming to an end at St.Mary Magdalene’s Church. English Heritage has provided the bulk of the funding for these major works to the Grade 1-listed Westbourne landmark.

The church has been given a complete new electrical installation, to replace the old system which was condemned as unsafe in the late 1990s, and a fabulous new lighting system, with custom-built Victorian-style chandeliers. The chandeliers, designed by church architect Colin Kerr, had to be approved by the London diocesan authorities as well as English Heritage before they were hand-made in a Soho workshop. The chandeliers incorporate uplighters which enable the church’s amazing painted ceiling to be seen better than ever before.

At the same time as the electrical works were being done, major drainage works were carried out on the north side of the church, to bypass Victorian drains that had become blocked or damaged by tree roots, and to carry away increasing amounts of ground water. The effect of the new drains has become obvious inside the building within weeks, as the north wall has begun to dry out. The drainage work was essential before any improvement work could be done in the crypt beneath the church, which had been liable to flooding.

The next phase of work at St. Mary Magdalene’s includes plans for a new building between the church and the neighbouring primary school, which will enable level access to the crypt as well as the main floor of the church, allowing the building to be used much more widely by the local community. A bid for funding for this next phase of the work is being made to the Heritage Lottery Fund this summer.

Thames Water planning works on Westbourne Green for a year

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Front page of the Westminster Chronicle 8th February 2013

Because of a flooding problem affecting properties in Maida Vale, Thames Water wants to build a new sewage pumping station underneath Westbourne Green.

If it goes ahead this will mean two small permanent buildings and two hatches on the ground, but during the digging of the pit, which may last 14 months, a large part of the Green will be taken over for the work compound, and will be unusable by residents.

The pumping station is clearly needed but Westbourne Forum and local councillors have been pressing Thames Water to find another site. This neighbourhood is already under stress in many ways. Conditions such as housing overcrowding and very high numbers of children and young people (the highest in Westminster) make access to open space all the more important. Parents at local schools have been signing our petition and our campaign featured on the front page of the Westminster Chronicle.

Thames Water insists that Westbourne Green is the site that would involve the least disruption, and will be applying for planning permission for the scheme. If they go ahead Westbourne Forum is asking as a minimum that:

  1. Work does not extend over more than one summer
  2. There is help for community activities that rely on the Green (like the Westbourne Summer Festival)
  3. Thames Water contributes to proper landscape improvements when they leave.

We encourage you to email the planning team raising these three points: northplanningteam@westminster.gov.uk, quoting the Unique Property Reference Number: 010033523844

At Paddington Development Trust we are concerned about climate change. We are hoping to support this community to get better access to locally sourced organic food. What better way than to grow it ourselves?

Much of the food available to us is very costly to the environment because it is frequently sourced from outside the UK. Not only does global food transportation increase carbon emissions but vast quantities of energy are wasted in practises of food production.

Volunteer with Westbourne Forum

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Westbourne Forum could not deliver events or decide on priorities without the involvement of volunteers.  We use volunteers in many different ways.  Firstly, the management board is made up of  7 resident volunteers and 7 community, business and youth volunteers as well as officers from various agencies.   If you have enjoyed any of our events such as International Day or the Festival on the Green, you could join the committee which is responsible for planning and organising events.  You could help us to deliver the event as a steward.   You could also get involved in any aspect of our work which particularly interests you.     Volunteering is a really good way to enhance your experience or try out a new kind of work to see if it suits you.   For more information on volunteering or becoming a Friend of the Forum please call Allison Bennett on 020 7266 8252 or email allison@pdt.org
