Major Improvements at St. Mary Magdalene’s Church

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The latest phase of improvement work is just coming to an end at St.Mary Magdalene’s Church. English Heritage has provided the bulk of the funding for these major works to the Grade 1-listed Westbourne landmark.

The church has been given a complete new electrical installation, to replace the old system which was condemned as unsafe in the late 1990s, and a fabulous new lighting system, with custom-built Victorian-style chandeliers. The chandeliers, designed by church architect Colin Kerr, had to be approved by the London diocesan authorities as well as English Heritage before they were hand-made in a Soho workshop. The chandeliers incorporate uplighters which enable the church’s amazing painted ceiling to be seen better than ever before.

At the same time as the electrical works were being done, major drainage works were carried out on the north side of the church, to bypass Victorian drains that had become blocked or damaged by tree roots, and to carry away increasing amounts of ground water. The effect of the new drains has become obvious inside the building within weeks, as the north wall has begun to dry out. The drainage work was essential before any improvement work could be done in the crypt beneath the church, which had been liable to flooding.

The next phase of work at St. Mary Magdalene’s includes plans for a new building between the church and the neighbouring primary school, which will enable level access to the crypt as well as the main floor of the church, allowing the building to be used much more widely by the local community. A bid for funding for this next phase of the work is being made to the Heritage Lottery Fund this summer.

There will be space for meetings that can be booked, computers that can be used by anyone, a Westminster Council one stop info booth, or just space to relax and have a coffee.

We need your help! Over the next month we will be having a community meeting with anyone that wants to help out. There will also be a day of painting and decorating and we need volunteers! Dates to be confirmed, please check back.

We also still want suggestions and information for our local history board. Do you have an object or piece of history that you think sums up the area? Please get in touch if so!

The budget is limited so second hand donations of furniture would be most welcome! We need the following items:

A History of Westbourne in 50 Objects

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

We need your help!

Westbourne Forum have commissioned a permanent wall display to be situated in the foyer of the Stowe Centre, entitled ‘A History of Westbourne in 50 Objects’ – and we need your ideas about which objects to  feature in order that this display represents the historyand diversity of Westbourne today.

The purpose of this display is to give Westbourne residents an opportunity to discover more about the history of the physical world they share with each another, and to give them a tangible connection to Westbourne residents of the past. The wall display will feature a picture or photograph of the object along with a short explanatory text and will be available to be viewed by everybody visiting the Stowe Centre.

We intend to feature ‘objects’ from the recent history of Westbourne such as Westminster Academy, large objects like the Westway, small objects which reveal buildings long gone, and objects which refer to distant history such as a map of the Bourne river from which the area takes  its name. We’d also like to find objects associated with the area, which reveal stories about the life and times of Westbourne people. For instance,

A Heinz Baked Beans can

Did you know that Heinz used the canal as one of its main delivery routes to and from its factory in Park Royal? Millions of tons of tomato puree and beans travelled West from the London Docks via the canal at Westbourne, and after manufacturing millions of cans of baked beans travelled back East to the docks, en route to dinner tables around the UK and the rest of the world.

How to get involved

In order to come up with an interesting list of 50 objects we are enlisting the help of local history groups, local organisations and local residents. If you have a favourite local landmark or object which you think should be featured let us know what it is and why it is important or interesting to you.

Please contact Allison at Westbourne Forum at allison@pdt.org.uk or call on 020 7266 8252. Please send us your ideas by Monday 21st March.

Vote for local project – On the Waterfront

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Local charity, the Floating Classroom’s project On the Waterfront is through to the final of the People’s Millions! They are about to go head-to-head with one other project in a public vote. The winner has their project funded; the loser gets nothing.

If they win the project On the Waterfront will provide film-making workshops for children at four schools in North Westminster, including Edward Wilson School in Westbourne. The children will research the histories of their neighbourhoods and the canals that run through it and then shoot short films based on these stories. They will try their hand at script-writing, scenery-making, performing, sound recording and filming. The project will culminate in a community premiere to celebrate the children’s achievements.

A TV feature about On the Waterfront will be shown on ITV’s London Tonight on TUESDAY 23 NOVEMBER between 6-6.30pm.  Phone lines open at 9am and close at midnight on Tuesday 23 November.

You can vote 10 times from every phone line that you have. From a BT line it costs 10p per call which is a total £1.00 for 10 votes – a very small price for victory!

The telephone number to vote will be released on the morning of the 23 November- to find the number please check the website www.beauchamplodge.co.uk  or http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/2010-finalists/london/on-the-waterfront  on 23 November.

Alternatively you can register to vote and will be sent the number to call on the morning of the 23 November.

There are four ways YOU can help:

1)     Register to vote on the 23 November: please send your name, telephone number and email address to info@beauchamplodge.co.uk and they’ll contact you on the day to remind you to vote. Remember you can vote 10 times from any number!

2)     Just vote on the day using any number you can call from – remember you can call up to 10 times from each number

3)     Tell all your friends and family to either register to vote or watch the programme on the 23 November and then vote for us

4)     Stay in touch by becoming a Friend of the Floating Classroom on Facebook or a Follower of @floatingclassro on Twitter.

The Floating Classroom really needs this funding to be able to continue offering exciting and fun learning activities to children in Westminster – please help them!
